Munkácsy in Szeged and in the World

From May 12, 2006 to July 2, 2006 forty five Munkácsy paintings can be seen at the Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged. The greater part of the paintings are owned by a Hungarian-American collector, Mr. Imre Pákh.
The Somogyi Library has organized also an exhibition from the rarities of the Library related to the traveling exhibition of the Museum of Szeged. Our exhibition displays connections of the famous Hungarian painter of the 19th century mainly with Szeged, and with the United States. A selection can be found in the eight showcases from contemporary publications of the Somogyi Library regarding Mihály Munkácsy, included an issue of the Vasárnapi Újság from 1870, which reported on the success of one of the most famous Munkácsy paintings the Siralomház (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). An another publication gathers together the appreciations - which were published in the contemporary French press - of the world-famous painting Milton, which won the gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris in 1878.

An extended part of the exhibition contains documents from the Vasvary Collection, which deal with the Munkácsy's trip to the United States in 1886, and with some of those American collectors who were in possession of Munkácsy paintings.
Edmund Vasvary also showed great concern about the fate of Munkácsy's paintings in the United States, and he wrote several articles connected with this topic.
The exhibit documents include also a congressional publication the Congressional Record from 1969. It was published on the occassion of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mihály Munkácsy. Twelve congressman from five U.S. States (Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania) commemorated the great Hungarian painter.
The exhibition can be visited at the Somogyi Library to July 1, 2006. The virtual version accessible at the following Internet address:
