    The Editor's Archives

The notes of the secret services concer-ning the former editors and authors of Korunk could not be consulted yet. Before the CNSAS office in Bucharest makes it possible, the editor-in-chief of Korunk speaks about his memories concerning this issue, and contextualizes these with excerpts from his readings about how the secret services worked in other countries.

    The Circumlocution Office of History

The distorting mirror of the problem of secret agents and revealing the past

In the wake of the regime change that started to take place in Eastern Europe somewhat more than a decade and a half ago a series of dilemmas has emerged in Hungary as well in connection with eva-luating and actually dealing with the history of the recent past. It has been attempted to give some sort of amendment to those who were injured or vilified during the previous regime. People who served the 'ancien régime' have been restricted from keeping their share in the structure of the power holding political institution of the new construction. As neither the lustration procedure nor the so called informational amendment have lived up to the expectations it was the work of document researchers exploring the past that has revealed several well-known public figures who used to be secret agents of the political police in the defeated regime. These events and the accompanying media scandals have helped the purification of public life in a way but at the same time they have also spoilt the reputation of historiography dealing with the recent past. This essay helps to give a better view of the labyrinths of the troubles of science and present day public life.

Ioan Petru Culianu, An „Expert on Power"

Culianu's provocative cultural and poli-tical journalism between December 1989 and April 1991 made his compatriot ultranationalist adversaries as well as the new, crypto-communist regime believe that he endangers the due political manoeuvers in Romania. His „magical" thoughts proved to be tragically scandalous: apart from being false or true, beliefs give rise to real events or worlds – and inversely; there is no significant difference between mythos and logos, ima-gination and mind, phantasma and text, being and cognition, eros and power... Considering him not only a scholar, an authority in the history of magic, gnosis and otherworlds, but rather an authentic up-to-date thinker and also a „traditiona-list" of the imagination/mind, the study maintains that the „expert on power" is an apolitical, ontological standpoint, respectively, the one ironic individuality whoever is devoid of direct or official power exertion, and is able to acquire the world's sine qua non cultural and histo-rical system of conditions, thus becoming immune against the prevailing standards. However, the publicly assumed cultural, political attitude deriving from this ontological „Arlequin"-status risks one's existence or at least might harm one's being.

    A Páskándi Géza – dosszié [129.32 kB - HTML]EPA-00458-00129-0100

    The Géza Páskándi-files

Géza Páskándi was a writer arrested in March 1957 in Cluj. He was sentenced for six years of jail as a political prisoner. The files concerning his trial and his activity after being released are a true mirror of Romania in those times. The two texts of Páskándi reproduced here for the first time, are kept in the CNSAS archives. They formulate the suggestions of Páskándi, a student of the Bolyai University at that time, about the libera-lization of the teaching process at the University, and also about the Students' Union that had just been founded. These were the two texts that stood at the base of his trial and of his severe sentence.
